Structure of the GRE General Test

The GRE is a computer-delivered test that assesses three major areas:

Verbal Reasoning (60 minutes total)

  • Two sections (20 questions each)

  • Reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence

  • Measures your ability to analyze and draw conclusions from written material

Quantitative Reasoning (70 minutes total)

  • Two sections (20 questions each)

  • Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis

  • Focus on problem-solving and numerical literacy

Analytical Writing (60 minutes)

  • One “Analyze an Issue” task

  • One “Analyze an Argument” task

  • Tests your ability to present ideas clearly and support them with reasoning

Scoring:

  • Verbal: 130–170 (1-point increments)

  • Quantitative: 130–170 (1-point increments)

  • Analytical Writing: 0–6 (half-point increments)

Your total score (Verbal + Quantitative) ranges from 260–340.
