What is the GMAT?

The GMAT is a standardized, computer-adaptive test administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). It is used primarily for admission into graduate management programs such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Finance, or Master of Accounting.

The GMAT evaluates critical thinking, data analysis, and communication skills—essential qualities for academic success in business programs and leadership in the workplace.

Structure of the GMAT Exam

The GMAT consists of four main sections:

Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) – 30 minutes

  • 1 essay task: Analyze an Argument

  • Measures critical thinking and communication through written analysis

Integrated Reasoning (IR) – 30 minutes

  • 12 questions involving data analysis

  • Includes tables, graphs, and multi-source reasoning

  • Tests your ability to evaluate information from different formats

Quantitative Reasoning – 62 minutes

  • 31 questions (multiple choice)

  • Focus on problem-solving and data sufficiency

  • Algebra, arithmetic, geometry, and number properties

Verbal Reasoning – 65 minutes

  • 36 questions

  • Reading comprehension, sentence correction, and critical reasoning

Scoring:

  • Total score range: 200 to 800

  • Quantitative and Verbal contribute most to the total score

  • AWA and IR are scored separately

Most top schools expect scores between 600 and 750.
